This guide saved me from a $400 Amazon scam. Almost pulled the trigger before reading the red flags section. Ended up with a real maker in Portugal instead — best decision ever.

Great breakdown of the price tiers. I'd add: check if the maker offers a sound sample of YOUR specific instrument before you pay the balance. My maker did this and it gave me so much confidence.

Shared this with our local handpan group. The scam indicators section is essential reading for beginners.

One thing nobody talks about enough: if a maker doesn't offer a tuning guarantee, walk away. Retuning costs €300+ per session and most makers have 6-month waiting lists just for that. So you buy a €900 instrument, it goes out of tune in 4 months, and now you're paying a third of the price again just to make it playable. An instrument without a guarantee is not worth your money, period.
